Mom Was Right. Posture Is Important.

Don’t slouch. Stand up straight. As much as you may not want to admit it, your mother was right. Posture is important. Poor posture can lead to many negative things, one of which is a pinched nerve. Pinched nerves can be very painful and can cause other symptoms, such as numbness and tingling in your hands and feet.

There are many forms of poor posture. The most common form of poor posture that leads to pain in the neck and shoulders as well as pain shooting down the arm into the hands is forward head posture. Forward head posture often results from sitting in a slouched position, which we often do when working at a computer.

The good news is that this type of posture issue can be corrected. Here are some home exercises to correct forward head posture. Chin tucks are one of the best exercises that you can do quickly and easily. In our September 2020 blog post on how working from home can cause shoulder and neck pain, there are links for additional helpful exercises and tips for setting up your home work space.

Is a pinched nerve from poor posture the cause of your pain? Give us a call at 215-361-5060 so we can help you identify the source of your symptoms and develop a specific treatment plan. Patient confidentiality is important to the team at Central Montgomery Orthopedics, so rest assured that your mom won’t hear it from us (unless you ask us to tell her).
